HWA Poetry Showcase Volume IX by Horror Writers Association Book Review

Are you up for the best spooky read of the year? If yes, we have the perfect book for you. As part of the Horror Writers Association’s annual release of poetry collection, HWA released their ninth volume of Poetry Showcase, which includes never-before-published dark and spine-chilling poems. Edited by Angela Yuriko Smith, the collection features an anthology of 50 poems from different authors handpicked by judges Lee Murray, Maxwell Gold, and Frances Lu-Pai Ippolito. Out of around 300+ submissions from other authors, only 50 were picked to be featured in the ninth volume. If you’re looking for a great selection of poems to quench your craving for bite-sized horrors, pick up this book.

HWA Poetry Showcase

The Horror Writers Association recently published its 9th volume of Poetry Showcase last October 19, 2022. Each year, the poetry showcase is open for entries to members of the Horror Writers Association; after careful deliberation from the collated submissions, the best entries are piled up into one book. The anthology features poems written by Mary A. Turzillo, Christina Sng, Alessandro Manzetti, Victoria Nations, K. H. Vaughan, and many more from the members of the Horror Writers Association.

Bite-Sized Terrors

Poetry Showcase Volume IX is a fantastic anthology of dark poems. The collection covers a wide variety of topics and stories that you can read. Each verse tells a story and gives its unique take on its definition of ‘horror.’ Some entries are executed lightly, while some reek into your mind for a mind-boggling and disturbing experience that will stay forever. The writers are given a chance to submit a poem, not exceeding 30-35 lines, which makes the whole anthology an enjoyable and fast read. If you’re in a hurry and looking for a book to pick up before going to work or break time, this book is perfect to pass some time.

Discover New Authors

Another reason why it’s good to read anthologies, especially a collection written by many writers, is that you’ll be able to discover new authors to read. With over 50 entries featured, you’ll be able to find a lot of great writers in the dark poetry genre. You’ll be able to distinguish how unique each writer is by reading poems with their own personalities and writing styles. There are quite a few that didn’t stick out to me, but most of them are good in their way.

Poetry Showcase by Horror Writers Association ianthology includes a ton of gems that horror fanatics must read. If you’re not a horror fan, you can still enjoy this work, as each poem is interesting to read. Reading this volume made me want to read past books too. In addition, I’m also looking forward to the next volume of Poetry Showcase in the coming years!

For fans of poetry and horror, this collection of poems will keep you turning pages, with the lights on and the doors locked. No one knows Horror like the Horrors Writers Association, and they’ve outdone themselves with this newest edition.
